Speaking

Talks that move rooms, not just people in them.

Matthew Barrington-Packer speaks on the gap between intent and delivery — why good work stalls, how to unstick it, and what it takes to build organisations that actually ship.

Talk topics

Four areas. All grounded in real delivery, real politics, and what it actually takes to move work forward under pressure.

01
Just F#cking Ship It: the five-move method for turning stuck rooms into outcomes
Most projects don’t fail in flames. They die in polite postponement. This talk introduces the VOLTS method — five repeatable moves for turning stuck meetings into decisions, decisions into movement, and movement into shipped outcomes. Not through charisma. Through a method anyone can learn and any team can run.
02
Why your best people can’t make things move: the hidden cost of drift
The most expensive problem in most organisations isn’t bad strategy — it’s good strategy that never lands. This talk is about the everyday, expensive form of inertia that fills calendars, eats momentum, and gets rewarded with more meetings. And what to do about it without a restructure, a consultant, or a miracle.
03
Delivery as leadership: what it looks like when the work actually ships
Leadership is often taught as vision. This talk is about the part that comes after — in the room, in the politics, in the gap between intent and delivery where most good work quietly disappears. What real delivery leadership looks like, what it requires, and how to build it in a team rather than depending on one person to carry it.
04
From transformation to traction: making large-scale change actually work
Transformation programmes fail for predictable reasons. This talk is about the patterns that derail change before it lands — the meetings that look like progress, the governance that protects the status quo, the stakeholders who want to win rather than ship — and the moves that cut through them.

Formats

How Matthew speaks

Keynote
30–60 minutes. A standalone talk for conferences, away days, or leadership events. Leaves the room with one clear idea they can act on Monday.
Conference talk
20–45 minutes. Adapted for the specific event theme and audience. Works well as an opener or closer for tracks on delivery, leadership, or transformation.
Corporate event or offsite
Talk plus Q&A or facilitated session. Works well when you want the room not just inspired but actually moving on something real before they leave.

What to expect

No theatre. No slides with too many circles.

Grounded in real work. Every talk is built from years of operating in environments where drift is expensive. Not case studies. Real patterns from real programmes.
Specific, not motivational. The room leaves with something they can actually use on Monday — a question, a move, a frame. Not a feeling that fades in the car park.
Adapted to your context. Matthew takes a brief seriously. The talk your audience gets is shaped for them — their industry, their current problem, their room.
Straight to the point. No warm-up filler. No six-shades-of-blue slide decks. Just direct, practical thinking with enough wit to keep a room awake.

“The worst failure isn’t a crash. It’s a programme that works technically and fails silently. That’s the kind of stuck this talk is about.”

— Matthew Barrington-Packer
