Clever people. Full diaries.
Nothing shipping.
My digital career started in New York, where things moved fast and nobody waited for permission. In the twenty years since, I’ve worked in the opposite as often as not: regulated, high-stakes, heavily governed programmes in finance, energy, education, government and defence.
I’m the person brought in when something important has quietly stopped moving. I leave once it’s shipped.
The rooms are always full of clever people. The calendars are full. The status reports are green. And the work isn’t moving.
Nobody says no. Nothing fails loudly. It just waits, for one more review, one more stakeholder, one more round of alignment. I started calling it polite postponement.
What got it moving was never a bigger plan. It was the same handful of moves, every time. Make the decision visible. Turn blockers into conditions. Ship something small enough to prove a point. Track movement, not activity. Tell the story so it survives the meeting.
One of those programmes, for the Ministry of Defence, was cited by the Secretary of State at the London Stock Exchange. Good headline. But the method was really forged on the programmes nobody live-streamed.
The VOLTS Method isn’t a theory built in a workshop. It’s the pattern I kept reaching for when the treacle had set and the work had to move. I wrote it down, and it became a book with a title most people say quietly the first time and loudly the second.

Different sectors.
Same stall.
VOLTS wasn’t written in a workshop. It was built in rooms where getting it wrong costs money, trust or a ministerial question.
- DefenceA digital test-and-evaluation marketplace on a modern cloud stack, where security and governance are the job, not the excuse.
- Central governmentDelivery where the decision is always more political than the plan, and momentum has to be earned in every meeting.
- EnergyValidating new ventures in an energy company’s incubator, including a city-scale digital twin pilot.
- EducationReplatforming a national exam board’s content system onto composable architecture, serving more than 65,000 users.
- Financial servicesAI-driven mortgage tools, and fraud-prevention software for a global defence and security group.
The tech changed every time. The stall never did.
Four lines I’ll repeat
in any room.
“Most stuck work doesn’t look stuck. It looks busy.”On delivery
“Opinion doesn’t move work. Proof does.”On decisions
“The meeting is not the work.”On alignment theatre
“If everything is in flight but nothing ships, the work is stuck.”On progress
Other people’s words,
not mine.
